Hack for Western Mass

I went to an R meetup last night at Smith College and Becky Sweger was there to talk about Hack for Western Mass.  I will be attending, and I encourage anyone who is interested in this to attend.  Here are the details:

On the weekend of June 1-2, students, developers, designers, and local organizations will gather at UMass for Hack for Western Mass. This event is one of almost 80 happening around the country as part of a White House-initiated weekend of civic hacking.

On Saturday morning, June 1, we’ll be hearing “challenges” from local organizations that can be solved through technology. Then we’ll break into teams and get to work. The projects will depend on the challenges and could range from visualizations and maps to APIs or customizing open source apps created at other hackathons.

Civic hacking has gained momentum across the country. For this movement to be a success in Western Mass, we need participation from the student, faculty, and staff communities, and we need your help getting the word out. In other words, we need you and would love to see you in June!

Registration is free but required, so please sign up if you’re planning to join us: http://hackforwesternmass.eventbrite.com/

How long is the average dissertation?

Note: Please see the update to this blog!

The best part about writing a dissertation is finding clever ways to procrastinate. The motivation for this blog comes from one of the more creative ways I’ve found to keep myself from writing. I’ve posted about data mining in the past and this post follows up on those ideas using a topic that is relevant to anyone that has ever considered getting, or has successfully completed, their PhD.

I think a major deterrent that keeps people away from graduate school is the requirement to write a dissertation or thesis. One often hears horror stories of the excessive page lengths that are expected. However, most don’t realize that dissertations are filled with lots of white space, e.g., pages are one-sided, lines are double-spaced, and the author can put any material they want in appendices. The actual written portion may only account for less…

Privacy and DNA

A Harvard professor has re-identified the names of more than 40% of a sample of anonymous participants in a high-profile DNA study, highlighting the dangers that ever greater amounts of personal data available in the Internet era could unravel personal secrets.

Read the whole story here.  Also, why not check out how unique your birthdate, zip code, and gender are by going here. (I am uniquely identifiable by my birthdate, gender, and zip code.  And you probably are too.)

Cheers.
